“Clay Marzo: Just Add Water” Wins Best Biography at X-DANCE Action Sports Film Festival

Quiksilver is pleased to announce "Clay Marzo: Just Add Water" took home the award for Best Biography at the X-DANCE Action Sports Film Festival, Tuesday night in Salt Lake City. Screenings for X-DANCE took place between Friday, January 15 and Monday, January 19. Over 40 films were selected for showings, out of hundreds of film submissions. A big congratulation goes out to the film’s director, Jamie Tierney, executive producer Strider Wasilewski, and star Clay Marzo. A huge thanks goes out to Adam Klevin, Chris Bryan, Shaun Peterson, Kemp Curley, Natas Kaupas, Bob McKnight and Jill Marzo for helping to make the film a great success.

"Just Add Water" is an action-packed surf film that tells Clay Marzo’s inspirational story about the gifts and challenges of living with Asperger’s syndrome. Like other kids growing up on the island of Maui, Clay Marzo lived in the waves. His pure love of the ocean along with his natural talent allowed him to excel to new heights, pushing the limits again and again. A member of Quiksilver’s elite Young Guns crew, his spontaneous, unpredictable and creative style has earned him three NSSA National surfing titles. His role in "Just Add Water" won him Best Male Performance at the 2008 SURFER Magazine Poll and Video Awards.

A portion of the proceeds from "Just Add Water" goes to benefit Surfer’s Healing, a Foundation for Autism.

One Coast, One Future

Recently the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative (JOCI) released a national report to West Coast local and state elected officials with recommendations to better protect our oceans and coasts. The Report ‘One Coast, One Future’ was requested by 19 elected officials from California, Oregon and Washington State, and provides guidance to decision-makers in ocean and coastal stewardship. Offering specific and immediate ways to coordinate a productive approach to protecting our marine environments it is a must read for all who are interested in preserving our oceans.

‘Protecting our oceans and coasts starts at the local level,’ said Leon E. Panetta, co-chair of the Joint Initiative and former White House Chief of Staff. ‘We are pleased to see so much interest in finding solutions to the critical problems facing our oceans and coasts. The Joint Initiative has provided the input that will lead to meaningful ocean policy reform at the state and local level,’ Panetta continued.

VICTORY FOR TRESTLES

Press Release

Secretary of Commerce Upholds Coastal Commission Decision

The Department of Commerce announced that it would uphold the California Coastal Commission’s ruling that found the TCA’s proposed extension of the 241 Toll Road inconsistent with the California Coastal Act. In a release issued from the Department of Commerce, they “determined that there is at least one reasonable alternative to the project [and] that the project is not necessary in the interest of national security.”

“We are elated that the Secretary of Commerce chose to uphold the California Coastal Commission’s ruling against the planned extension to the SR-241 toll road,” says Surfrider Foundation’s Assistant Environmental Director Mark Rauscher. “This decision is a significant milestone in our efforts to protect San Onofre State Beach Park and the surrounding environment; and underscores the effectiveness of grassroots activism.”

While this is a major victory for the Surfrider Foundation and its coalition members, the fight to build the toll road is not over. Toll road opponents need to continue writing letters and communicating with their local elected officials to convey pleasure with the results and support the Department of Commerce’s decision.

“This victory would not have been possible if it was not for the activists who showed up by the thousands at the California Coastal Commission and Department of Commerce hearings,” continues Rauscher. “Should the TCA decide to appeal the decision, the Surfrider Foundation and its coalition partners are ready to fight that battle as well.”

The Surfrider Foundation now calls upon the TCA and other state and local officials to embrace alternative transportation strategies that will better address the county’s traffic issues without jeopardizing our environmental, recreational and economic resources.

Katiet Centre Extends Services

Quiksilver SurfAid Community Health Training Centre manager Matt
King has been in the Mentawai since August developing a strategic plan
for the centre and other plans to encourage community participation.
The Katiet Centre has also become the permanent home of the monthly
posyandu service for residents of Mongan Bosua and Katiet.

(Posyandu is the community-supported monthly care clinic that provides
immunizations, growth monitoring, nutrition education, vitamin A
supplements, antenatal care, family planning, and diarrheal disease
control [ORS packets] for pregnant women and children under five years.
It is organized by the community and served by community volunteers
with the provision of technical assistance from the local health centre
staff.)

One of the key components of a successful posyandu is weighing and
measuring of children, assessing their development against national
standards, and advising parents on what to do if their children are
classified as underweight.
