Message on a Bottle

SIGG has generously donated 50 reusable water bottles to Quiksilver for our second employee Art Showcase!
Applying any medium they wish, Quik employees are being challenged to
design their bottles using an "Eco Beach" theme in celebration of
Quiksilver’s desire to
preserve the worlds boardriding communities and environments. On March 17th a silent auction will take place at Quiksilver HQ with
all of the proceeds being donated to The Ecology Center. The bottle
with the highest bid will be profiled on Quiksilver, SIGG, and The Ecology Center websites. Stay tuned…

Help Surfrider Get a Better Understanding of YOUR Community and Surrounding Marine Areas

PRESS RELEASE

The Surfrider Foundation is currently working with a wide variety of individuals and organizations on the Marine Life Protection Act –or MLPA. The MLPA is a state law that requires establishing a "network" of marine protected areas along the California coastline. This law is currently being implemented in Southern California. Much like our National Parks protect special places on land, these Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) offer heightened protection for marine life to thrive and people to enjoy. MPAs around the globe have become popular attractions for people to enjoy nature’s beauty and abundance. Establishing MPAs can also help restore healthy fisheries.

Surfrider Foundation members represent a broad spectrum of people who enjoy time in the ocean. Our collective knowledge from this experience can help design an effective network of MPAs and recommendations from local communities to help formulate a regional network of MPAs. Our goal is to balance our members’ commitment to restoring and protecting our coast and ocean for generations, with our support of sustainable and accessible fishing opportunities. Help establish successful Marine Protected Areas by completing this survey (all responses are anonymous).

The 8th Annual Surfing Arts, Science and Issues Conference

PRESS RELEASE

"Surfing and Shaping Waves and Equipment"
February 28 and March 1, 2009
Sumner Auditorium – Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, California
Register Online Here!

This year’s conference is all about efforts to try and take the
guesswork out of making better waves and better surfing equipment. Of
course, everyone has a different take on what makes a good wave – and
evaluating surfboard performance can often lead to opinions that are
little more than ‘psychosomatic’ (Steve Pezman, 2000). However, with
some outstanding engineers and clear-thinking surfers on the agenda, as
well as a first-ever fin ‘turbulence’ project at the Scripps Hydraulic
Laboratory, SASIC 8 promises to be an event unique in the history of
surfers trying to create waves and equipment to match their dreams.

Saturday – Conference Sessions

9 a.m. Introduction and welcome – Cher Pendarvis and Glenn Hening

9:30 a.m. Shaping Waves in the Ocean: Dr. Jose Borrero, University of Southern California
Dr. Borrero’s presentation will touch on his work while at USC on
nearshore shoaling systems and his current work with ASR, the New
Zealand company building surfing reefs around the world. He will also
present concerning the recent removal of Pratte’s Reef and what was
learned from the project.

10:30 a.m. Shaping Waves on Land – Marshall Myrman, Wave Loch, Inc.
From a table-top model of a standing wave in 1994 to installed
Flowriders around the world, Tom Lochtefeld and crew have spent a lot
of time and energy coming up with ways to shape waves that create a
surfing-like experience with not an ocean in sight. Marshall will
present an overview of the history – and the future of Wave Loch, Inc.

11:30 a.m. The Dr. Walter Munk Lecture Series
The Physical Forces of Surfing – Dr. David Sandwell, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
The Society is honored to have Dr. Munk lend his considerable
reputation to recognize significant achievements in the world of
oceanography by recommending Dave Sandwell to provide us with an
overview of the forces and physical properties involved in riding
waves.

Lunch break

1:00 p.m. Equipment Update – Tyler Callaway, Bob ‘The Greek’ Bohlen and Ned McMahon
The men behind FCS, the Turbo Tunnel fins and Biofoam will each give a
brief update on developments in their fields since their presentations
at SASIC 6 in 2007.

1:30 p.m. Fin Turbulence Patterns – Steve Pendarvis, veteran surfer and equipment designer
Steve will narrate a slide show of turbulence patterns photographed at
the Hydraulics Lab at Scripps of fins from his collection and other
unique fins. This project was conducted not to make any claims for or
against any particular fin design but rather to take a preliminary step
towards more rigorous testing in the future.

2:00 p.m. Icthyodynamics and Surfboard Design  – Glenn Hening, veteran surfer and Society co-founder
A presentation on the pioneering work of Rick Vogel to understand what
can be learned from fish when it comes to surfboard design. Focusing on
the shape of an oceanic apex predator, the broadbill swordfish, Vogel
unlocked some of the secrets behind a naturally efficient design
essentially un-changed for 35 million years.

3:00 p.m.  Panel Discussion
A Q&A session covering issues raised during the day’s proceedings.

4:30 p.m. Wrap up and closing film – The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun
Arguably the most innovative surfing film of its time, George
Greenough’s coverage of different surfboard and fin designs has been
modified for greater clarity, and you won’t want to miss seeing
George’s footage from inside the tube projected on a big screen.

Sunday

8 a.m. to noon, a morning of wave-testing a variety of surfboard and
fin designs. In years past we have had surfers riding up to nine
different boards to open up new versions of their surfing experience,
and the waves at the Scripps Pier have made it a fun time for all.

Pre-registration is $45 – includes parking, event t-shirt, and a box lunch for the first 75 attendees.  Register Online Here.

Special ‘tough times’ rates! Bring the whole family for only $45,
and students/seniors get in for free. (No free lunches or shirts).
Walk-up registration $50 – Free shirts and food while they last. Cash or check only please.
To pre-register, Send check or money order payable to Groundswell Society to
SASIC 8 c/o Glenn Hening – Groundswell Society, 5212 Moonstone Way, Oxnard Shores, 93035

Sumba Foundation 2009 Community Development Projects

In 2008, more than 90% of all The Sumba Foundation donations went directly to benefit the impoverished people of Sumba.  In 2009, their major project initiatives continue to be WATER, HEALTH and EDUCATION.

But they need your help to continue their generous  work.  To do this, they have put together the following catalog of projects that allows you – the donor – to decide how your money is spent.

By contributing towards a specific project or category you will know exactly where your donation is going and who your donation will help.

You can either Download the 2009 Community Development Projects Catalog or click through The Sumba Foundation website for more information.

Please do not hesitate to Contact The Sumba Foundation if you have any questions about the projects or how to donate.
