Coming back for our 4th year with a new, improved name and 8 locations in the U.S., SurfAid is offering a simple & easy way to make a difference in the effort to improve global health. Get involved with SurfAid International and their efforts to save lives by signing up for Swim 4 Humanity at www.surfaidinternational.org/swim4humanity2010. Awesome prizes from our sponsors and lunch provided makes this day spent hanging out at the pool a great time and a meaningful effort to help others.

Fundraising for all eight locations will continue through the end of May culminating with the top prize of a trip to Indonesia going to the #1 fundraiser amongst all participants!

The outpouring of support for the Chilean coastal community relief efforts has been amazing so far, thank you! Though the devastation is significant, progress is being made in these coastal communities. BUT, we are asking for one last rally of support.

Our resident hero on the streets down there Quinn Campbell who has been on it almost 24/7 since the morning of the quake and tsunami, lost his own house in the coastal village of Curanipe, and abandoned his vacation plans with his wife and son to lead the way and direct the majority of the relief efforts along the coastal towns and villages. Quinn advised us that the local divers and fisherman (Quik team rider and Chilean charger Ramon Navarro’s father being one) have lost a lot of their equipment, including their already meager wetsuit quivers.

With that, in conjunction with SIMA, Quiksilver Foundation is heading up a wetsuit drive over the next 2 weeks thru march 26. So please scour your homes for those fullsuits you no longer wear or have grown out of and make a difference by donating them to our Chilean friends.

Following are the specific needs Quinn gave us:

ONLY MENS FULL SUITS, BOOTIES & HOODS (no springs, short arm fulls or vests!)

Ideally we want 4/3’s or 5/4/3’s but we will take 3/2’s as well

Sizes needed include mens small, medium, large or xl

Old dive suits are very welcome

Basically any fullsuit that is in somewhat decent condition, the warmer the better

Please mail or drop-off all suits to:

Quiksilver

Attn: Jeff Wilson

15362 Graham St.

Huntington Beach, CA 92649

Thanks for your help once again!!!

March 22nd is World Water Day – a global observance of our planet’s most precious resource. In recognition of World Water Day, the Surfrider Foundation is unveiling a robust offering of events and activities, including the launch of a new water quality and management-related program, a new educational video, an exciting water quality-themed online contest, and a one day-only membership offering.

Founded in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Water Day was created to help focus public attention on the critical water issues facing our global community. The theme for this year’s World Water Day is “Clean Water for a Healthy World.”

“Water is the foundational basis for all life on the planet,” says Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “How we interact and manage water has a direct affect on not only our marine resources, but the whole of our world as well.”

To help illustrate this point, the Surfrider Foundation is launching “Know Your H20″ – a new program that focuses on the issues behind use and management of our world’s water resources – on World Water Day.

“Know Your H20 is the next evolutionary step in Surfrider Foundation’s long-running Blue Water Task Force monitoring program,” says McClain. “Our goal is to move beyond telling people there are challenges to marine water quality, and towards educating them on how they can take steps to improve it.”

The Surfrider Foundation officially launches the program with the premiere of their highly anticipated animated movie “The Cycle of Insanity: The Real Story of Water.” The film, which was created by a cadre of Surfrider Foundation volunteer activists, is narrated by LOST star Zuleikha Robinson and focuses on the various challenges and solutions relating to water management.

Surfrider Foundation will also be kicking off an online contest for its Blue Note Karaoke event on World Water Day. Starting March 22nd, people can log onto MySpace and enter for a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to California to participate in Surfrider’s Blue Note Karaoke event on May 6th.

Finally, the Surfrider Foundation will be offering a special one-day only World Water Day membership package on March 22nd. For the discount price of $20 (regularly $25), purchasers will receive a one-year membership to the Surfrider Foundation and their choice of either a reusable FilterForGood Nalgene bottle or organic tote bag.

For additional information on the Surfrider Foundation’s World Water Day activations, visit surfrider.org.

As you all are aware the coast of Chile was hit Saturday morning by a devastating 8.8 earthquake, with numerous significant aftershocks following. The epicenter of the quake was in the heart of the Chilean surf community and our team rider Ramon Navarro’s turf, from Pichilemu south to Concepcion. So this one’s close to home for Quiksilver.

We’ve been assessing the situation with a handful of people on the ground, including our very own Quinn Campbell, who’s been invaluable on helping us the last 2 days sort out the damage and the needs. It’s become abundantly clear the most immediate need is providing water filters, as most of the water delivery systems have been severely damaged.

With that, on behalf of the company, the Quiksilver Foundation is contributing to Save the Waves, which has been on the ground since the get-go and is very connected to the local populations and the surf community due to its extensive environmental initiatives there. We are very pleased to be supporting their efforts, which are in conjunction with two other organizations assisting them, Waves for Water and Operation Rainbow.

Additionally, we encourage each of you to donate individually what you can to the relief effort in Chile. We are confident that your donations will be productively used by routing them to any one of the three aid organizations involved in the region:

Save the Waves

Waves for Water

Operation Rainbow

Thank you all for your contributions and heartfelt wishes to the people of Chile for a successful relief and rebuilding effort in the coming months.

As you know, the magnitude 7 quake that struck Haiti this past Tuesday has become a major catastrophe for the region to say the least. Thousands of people are without shelter, food and water. There has been no firm estimate on how many people have lost their lives in the quake but experts estimate that toll could be in the thousands. The international Red Cross estimated 3 million people (a third of the population) may need emergency relief.

In response, The Quiksilver Foundation is making a contribution to Operation USA. Operation USA is an international relief agency that helps communities at home and abroad overcome the effects of disasters, disease and endemic poverty by providing privately-funded relief, reconstruction and development aid. Our contribution to Operation USA will help to gather the much needed medical and emergency supplies.

If you would like to make a personal contribution, listed below are a number of different NGO’s (non-governmental organization) that are taking donations to purchase the resources needed (i.e. temporary shelters, food, water and medical supplies).

The American Red Cross is pledging an initial $200,000 to assist communities impacted by this earthquake. They expect to provide immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. They are accepting donations through their International Response Fund at https://american.redcross.org/site/Donation2?4306.donation=form1&idb=428732091&df_id=4306&JServSessionIdr004=yxa9a0v901.app194a&NoJSReload=1

UNICEF has issued a statement that “Children are always the most vulnerable population in any natural disaster, and UNICEF is there for them.” UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund. https://secure.unicefusa.org/site/Donation2?df_id=6680&6680.donation=form1 You can also call 1-800-4UNICEF.
